Service Introduction
The BGCA Trauma Counselling Centre is committed to promoting “trauma-informed care and practice” for children and their families affected by traumatic experiences. The Centre provides children and young people aged 3 to 21 with psychological trauma treatment services, in order to address the negative yet profound impact traumas have caused to their physical and mental health. Our Service adopts ARC intervention (Attachment, Affect Regulation, Competence), combined with various psychological therapy approaches, to effectively address and treat traumatic experiences, as well as to foster growth and development.
Target Service UsersChildren and adolescents from 3 to 21 years old
ObjectivesTo provide children and young people with a safe, reliable environment that allows them to reshape their traumatic experiences and mitigate the subsequent impact
- Provide support and education to parents, caregivers, teachers and mental health professionals, to ensure affected children and young people receive the necessary care and protection from further trauma
- Contribute to the counselling sector in Hong Kong by developing cultural-relevant trauma assessment tools and treatment modalities
- Raise public awareness of protection for children and young people against trauma by promoting knowledge on how they are affected by traumatic experiences
Features- When a person undergoes traumatic experiences, fundamental changes and impact are created on the body, such as sensory experiences, where the body stores them as trauma experiences (van der Kolk, 2014). Help provided to children and young people affected by traumatic experiences must start at the sensory level, before proceeding to understanding their experiences at the cognitive level. In many cases, however, children show different physiological responses against traumatic events even a long time has passed. Such responses are often hard to be expressed in words, and this is where interventions other than talk-oriented therapy serve to be more effective.
- The Service is integrating various expressive art elements that allow children and young people to experience and express their feelings towards certain traumatic events. They are therefore given a chance to reshape their traumatic experiences, mitigate the adverse impact that may prevent them from rebuilding a safe and healthy life. Through various types of interventions such as expressive art therapy, play therapy, dance & movement therapy and music therapy, our therapists are able to provide children and young people with more comprehensive care. The Centre also offers services including individual counselling, group therapy, parent’s hotline, community education and professional trainings among others.
