Change Begins at Home
Judgemental stares from others, difficulties with studying and socialising, self-doubt and self-negation... Besides the many challenges SEN children face, their parents also experience uncertainty, confusion, and self-blame. Who is willing to empathise with the situation of SEN families?
BGCA has always been concerned with the well-being of children with special educational needs (SEN), actively promoting early childhood intervention and developmental and support services for families. In addition to supporting the learning needs of children and providing counselling services to them and their parents, we also help strengthen familial bond, improve parent-child interaction and bring social service networks and community partners together. We do not just support SEN children but provide assistance to families as a whole, encouraging change for SEN children to begin at home.
Let’s take a moment to step into the world of SEN families and understand the challenges they face.
Ages 0-6: Preschool SEN children and their parents fear being labelled and are prone to feelings of self-blame and defeat. Care, inclusion, and acceptance from society can help parents manage their emotions and face their challenges, and help children develop a sense of security and strengthen their developmental foundation.
Ages 7-12: SEN children live in their own worlds and are prone to being isolated at school. At this stage, emotional support from their family is especially crucial. Providing families with quality parent-child interaction time can help the children tackle their challenges.
Ages 13-24: SEN youth begin to understand that they’re different, which makes them self-conscious and prone to low self-esteem. By exploring their strengths and making life plans together, parents can help their children find their own ways to integrate into society.
Caring for SEN Families Together
SEN children and their families face many pressures in life. But with appropriate support, quality interaction and strong familial bond, we can uncover the unique skills of each SEN child and allow parents, while they watch their children grow, to also attend to their own needs.
We encourage people from all walks of life to support SEN families. Together, we can nurture and uphold family values, start creating loving homes for our children.
