Helping a Desperate Dropout Kid Get Back to School During the Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected all walks of life, making life even harder for underprivileged families. One of our members, Yan Yan (pseudonym), and her mother also suffered.

Yan Yan, who was originally in kindergarten, was raised by her single mother. Her mother has been working hard to support the family economy on her own. She has never applied for any external support, while also taking care of Yan Yan's grandmother.

However, since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, Yan Yan’s mother has lost her job and spent half a year in a "zero income" state, depleting her savings, making their poor life even more stressful, and ultimately unable to afford Yan Yan's tuition. Yan Yan was therefore suspended from school, and Yan Yan's mother also suffered from depression due to the long-term pressure of life, which undoubtedly caused a double blow to the vulnerable family.

After learning about the situation, our stationing school social worker of Yan Yan’s kindergarten immediately took the initiative to assist in applying for the subsidy from "Treasure Trove", supporting Yan Yan and her mother to solve their financial difficulties, so that Yan Yan's mother could pay the tuition fee and help Yan Yan to return to school. At the same time, the mental health of Yan Yan’s mother has been relieved due to the reduction of financial stress, and she has regained her motivation for work and life.
