“If I can see” – a wish from a child who is diagnosed for severe amblyopia

A primary 4 student who uses the pseudonym Ho Fai, lives in a sub-divided flat with his mother and sister. This family relies on Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) for their living. Ho Fai’s mother found that Ho Fai got amblyopia at the age of 2. As time goes by, his eyesight goes up to 1,000 degrees for both eyes which cause a strong impact on his school and everyday life. Since his eye disorder is a rare case, he needs to spend a lot on the medical costs of amblyopic correction for the eyeglass prescription and the regular comprehensive eye examinations. It brings the financial burden on the family, as a result, Ho Fai cannot change the eyeglass even the old one he daily wears got damaged, he can only use the adhesive tape to fix it. He has even got no vision check for more than three years just to save a little money and didn’t want to increase his mother’s financial burden.

Severe amblyopia brings a huge inconvenience for Ho Fai’s school and everyday life. It is not only about he can’t see the words clearly on the blackboard in class, but also the poorer vision makes his eyes often get tired easily and his eyestrain is getting worse. It is especially important to get the right power of the eyeglass he needs to correct problems that results in amblyopia for keeping Ho Fai’s eyes healthy and keep up with his studies for the upper primary school stage.

At last Ho Fai’s mother got the Treasure Trove support to pay for the eye exam and corrective eyewear for Ho Fai with the help of our social worker. So now Ho Fai can finally see things clearly given his eyestrain is corrected with the new eyeglass and that improves his educational disadvantage. Ho Fai can now see things much more clearly and go even further.
